LOS ANGELES (AP) - Brian Scalabrine, a sophomore who redshirted last seasonafter winning a junior college title, scored 14 points as Southern Californiahanded San Diego State its worst loss ever, 101-54 Tuesday night.
The Trojans led the entire game and their 47-point victory margin was theirlargest since they beat Arizona State 117-71 at the end of last season.
San Diego State (0-2) struggled with its own inexperience. The Aztecs havenine new players this season, including two freshman starters. Most of thetime, they couldn't hold onto the ball.
The Aztecs' previous worst loss was by 45 points to Stanford two years ago.
Scalabrine's slam dunk off a steal by Quincy Wilder capped a 9-0 run thatgave USC a 35-10 lead midway through the first half.
Scalabrine helped Highline Community College in Des Moines, Wash., to astate JC title in 1997. He sat down for good with 14:06 left in the game.
Freshman Sam Clancy had 11 points and Wilder and Greg Lakey added 10 eachfor USC.
Brady Trenkle, the son of coach Fred Trenkle, led the Aztecs with 10 points.
The shot clock at USC's end of the floor went dark about five minutes intothe game. After a brief delay, the game resumed without the clock, which wasfixed for the second half.
San Diego State probably wished the rest of the game never happened.Trailing by 24 at halftime, the Aztecs were buried minutes into the secondhalf. USC ran off 14 straight points to take a 70-32 lead. Scalabrine gotthings started with four straight points, but then the Trojans took turnsscoring.
A 3-pointer by David Abramowitz and a basket by Jeffrey Berokoff brieflystopped USC's run, but Brandon Granville answered with five straight points andthe Trojans were off on another scoring binge. A free throw by Lakey boostedUSC's lead to 45 points with 8:50 remaining.
