SAN DIEGO (AP) - Matt Watts scored 24 points to lead San Diego State to a 75-72 victory over San Jose State on Saturday night.

The game was the last for coach Fred Trenkle at San Diego State (4-22, 2-12 WAC). He had announced his resignation earlier in the season.

Myron Epps added 13 points for the Aztecs, making seven of 11 free-throw attempts as San Diego State had its worst record since the 1991-92 squad finished 2-26.

San Jose State (12-15, 5-9) lost its 15th consecutive road game in the conference while playing the final 5:26 without three starters who had fouled out.

Michael Quinney sank two free throws to pull San Jose State within 74-72 with 47 seconds left. After the Aztecs had an apparent field goal nullified by an offensive foul call with 13 seconds to go, Quinney drove downcourt but lost the ball with five seconds left.

The Spartans, who trailed 40-28 at halftime, cut their deficit to 44-43 six minutes into the second half. They closed to within one point five times, but could not tie or move ahead.

Terrance Richmond led San Jose State with 18 points while Quinney added 15 points and five assists.
