SAN DIEGO (AP) - Matt Watts scored 13 of his 23 points in the second half Saturday night as San Diego State snapped an 11-game losing streak by beating Hawaii 78-72.
The win was the first in Western Athletic Conference play for the Aztecs (3-21, 1-11 WAC). Coach Fred Trenkle has already announced he will resign at the end of the season. The Aztecs have two games remaining - both at home.
Myron Epps added 17 points and Vincent Okotie had 14 and eight rebounds for San Diego State, which won the game by outscoring the Rainbows 12-6 over the final two minutes.
Watts made a layup with two minutes remaining to snap a 66-all tie. It was 74-72 before Watts made four foul shots in as many attempts in the final 17.7 seconds left to complete the scoring.
Johnny White led Hawaii (5-19, 2-10) with 23 points and seven assists. Marquette Alexander had 15 points and 11 rebounds and Philipp Czernin scored 14 points for the Rainbows.
The Aztecs took an early 24-12 lead, but the Rainbows battled back, and trailed by just one point, 33-32, at halftime. San Diego State led 65-57 before Hawaii went on a 9-1 run to tie the game at 66.
