Men From Montezuma Mesa in Third After First Day of Play

The San Diego Sate men's golf team, fueled by three top-12 performances, is in third-place after the first day of play at the Aldila Collegiate Classic at Carlton Oaks Country Club (par 72, 7,000 yards) in Santee, Calif. The Aztecs are nine strokes behind the leader, 16th-ranked Northwestern, after shooting a team nine-over par 291-294-585. Twentieth-ranked Brigham Young is in second-place at 584.

The Scarlet and Black were led by Kurt Cassidy. The senior from Vancouver, Canada is tied for second after firing a one-under par 72-71-143. In fifth-place is James Stewart, just one stroke behind Cassidy. Magnus Carlsson is tied for 12th, shooting a 73-73-146.

The Aztecs also have a JV team entered in the 20-team tournament. They are in 15th-place, after shooting a team 612. Paul Becker leads the JV team, firing a 74-71-145 en route to a sixth-place tie.

Northwestern's Luke Donald, last year's national freshman of the year, leads the 100-man field, firing a five-under par 70-69-139.
