SAN DIEGO (AP) - Jonas Lewis ran for 142 yards and a touchdown on 37 carries as San Diego State beat Fresno State 10-0 in the Western Athletic Conference on Saturday night, the Aztecs' first shutout since 1984.
The Aztecs (5-4 overall, 5-1 WAC) allowed no offensive touchdowns, extending their streak to nine quarters. Their last shutout came on Oct. 6, 1984 in a 21-0 victory at Wyoming.
By winning for the fifth time in six games, the Aztecs kept pace with Brigham Young for a share of first place in the WAC's Pacific Division. The Cougars beat New Mexico 46-21 on Saturday.
BYU, however, holds the tiebreaker edge after its 13-0 victory over San Diego State last week. It was the Aztecs' first shutout loss since 1985.
Fresno State (3-6, 3-3) managed just 136 yards, including 87 passing.
San Diego State limited Jaime Kimbrough, who played high school football here, to 29 yards on 11 carries. Kimbrough was the WAC's third-ranked rusher, averaging 97.9 yards per game.
The Aztecs' first touchdown in 10 quarters came on Lewis' 6-yard run 6:05 before halftime. The score completed a 12-play, 55-yard march.
Nate Tandberg's 37-yard field goal in the first quarter accounted for the other San Diego State score.
Fresno State advanced to the Aztecs 26 late in the half but came away empty when Rico Curtis intercepted a pass in the end zone.
