Baseball Sweeps Twin Bill at BYU

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State jumped back into the race for a spot in the 1999 WAC Baseball Tournament by sweeping a doubleheader from Brigham Young in Provo on Thursday. The Aztecs won the first game, a seven-inning affair, by a score of 8-5. then took the nightcap, 19-12.

The wins evened SDSUs season mark to 21-21 and improved its conference record to 8-9. The Cougars fell to 19-24 (7-12 WAC).

In game one, junior Jeremy Cook picked up his fifth win of the season, allowing three earned runs in 5.2 innings. Senior A.J. Samadani picked up his second save of the year. They were supported offensively by Matt Ricardys two-run home run, his first of the year, and a pair of hits from soph Edgar Gonzalez as every batter in the Aztec lineup recorded at least one hit.

The second game turned into a slugfest as San Diego State tied a team mark by pounding five home runs. Paul Lockhart had a pair of bombs for his second two-home run game of the season. Also hitting round trippers were Ben Leuthard, Brandon Rogers and Gonzales. Junior Aaron Harang picked his fifth win of the season, striking out nine in his six innings of work.

The Aztecs and Cougars meet in the final game of their three-game series on Friday (April 16) at 2:00 p.m. (MDT) in Provo.
