Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader from Hawaii-Hilo

April 3, 1999

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State Aztecs swept a doubleheader from Hawaii-Hilo by scores of 3-1 and 12-3 at Tony Gwynn Stadium on Friday. The win snapped a four-game losing streak for SDSU and improved its record to 17-18. The Vulcans dropped to 6-30.

The days first game was a pitching duel between Hilos Ben Siff and SDSUs Aaron Harang. UHH scored a run in the top of the first and made it stand up until junior Tyler Echelbarger unloaded a solo home run, his first of the season for the Aztecs, in the bottom of the sixth.

One inning later, Ben Leuthards double drove in Matt Ricardy and Paul Lockhart to provide the winning runs. Harang went eight innings for SDSU, giving way in the ninth to A.J. Samadani who picked up his first save of the year.

The nightcap was a different story as San Diego State got all of its 12 runs in the first three innings, including seven in the second frame. Echelbarger, who went 5-for-9 on the day, led SDSU with three hits while Leuthard and senior Javier Ramos had two apiece. Paul Lockhart scored three runs and finished the day 4-for-6 with three doubles.

Junior righthander Jeremy Cook went the distance on the mound for the Aztecs, recording his fourth win of the season. He allowed three earned runs and walked only two while striking out nine.

The teams will conclude their three-game series on Saturday, April 3, at 3:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
