Baseball Strikes Gold in 10th Inning

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State scored an unearnedrun in the bottom of the 10th inning to escape with a 10-9 non-conferencevictory over Long Beach State Wednesday night at Tony Gwynn Stadium.

With one out in the 10th inning, the Aztecs' Bobby Womack hit a fly ballto left fielder Jeff Jones. Jones dropped the ball for a two-base error,setting the stage for SDSU's comeback victory.

Next, Billy Montgomery was next hit by a pitch by 49ers reliever CaseyOlenberger. Paul Lockhart, who had four hits in the game for the Aztecs,was intentionally walked to load the bases. Then designated hitter SeanPierce chopped the ball to second baseman A.J. LaBarbera. His throw tohome plate was late and Womack scored the winning run.

Long Beach State trailed, 7-6, heading into the top of the ninth andscored three runs. The outburst was highlighted by Jaeme Leal's two-run homer.It was his second homer of the game and his eighth of the season. He hita two-out, two-run homer in the first to get the 49ers going.

San Diego State came back to tie the game off reliever JeffLeuenberger, who came on with runners on first and second, proceeded tohit a batter and then walk home the tying two runs in the ninth.

SDSU opens WAC play this weekend with a three-game seriesagainst Utah at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The Aztecs lead the all-time seriesbetween the two schools by a 53-7 margin.
