Baseball Outlasts Nebraska, 12-11

February 8, 1999

SAN DIEGO - Senior Ryan Hurds bases-loaded single in the bottom of the ninth drove in the winning run as San Diego State defeated Nebraska, 12-11, in the final game at the Showdown in the Desert in Peoria, Arizona. The Aztecs improved its 1999 record at 2-1 while the Cornhuskers fell to 2-1.

Senior righthander Jeremy Cook picked up his first win of the season in relief after shutting down a Nebraska rally in the ninth that allowed the Huskers to tie the game at 11-11. Nebraskas Steve Hale (0-1), who pitched the final four innings and had retired the side in order in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, took the loss.

Hurds game-winning hit came after John Pashales opened the ninth with a double and Matt Ricardy walked. A one-out walk to Edgar Gonzalez set the stage for the winner by Hurd who was 3-for 5 on the day with a triple and two runs scored. Pashales went 3-for-5 with a double, triple and a pair of runs batted in.

SDSU travels to Hilo, Hawaii on Monday for the first of a four-game series with Hawaii-Hilo at 6:00 p.m. tomorrow evening.
