SAN DIEGO - A bases-loaded wild pitch in the top of the ninth inning scored the winning run as the University of Hawaii defeated San Diego State, 4-3, at Tony Gwynn Stadium on Thursday night.
The loss dropped SDSUs overall record to 26-28 and 13-12 in the Western Athletic Conference. The Rainbows, meanwhile, improved to 33-17 (12-13 WAC).
The Aztecs fought back from a 3-0 deficit with a pair of runs in the seventh and a solo home run from Brandon Rogers in the eighth. But the Rainbows got a leadoff double in the ninth from Corey Miller who was bunted over to third base. After an intentional walk to Sean Takamori, Aztec starting pitcher Jeremy Cook gave way to senior A.J. Samadani who intentionally walked Michael Darrt to load the bases with one out.
Samadani got first basenman Jamie Aloy to strike out, but threw a wild pitch on a 2-0 count to the next hitter, Scooter Martines, to score the deciding run. Cook took the loss to drop to 6-11. Randon Ho picked up his sixth win of the season in relief for the Rainbows.
Freshman Chad Chop led the Aztec attack with three hits including a double. Rogers home run was his seventh of the seaosn and third in the Aztecs last three games.
SDSU and Hawaii continue their three-game conference series on Friday with a 7:00 p.m. start. Saturdays game, scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m., will be SDSUs final home game of the 1999 campaign.
