Baseball Loses at USD

SAN DIEGO - The University of San Diego Toreros ended San Diego States four-game winning streak on Tuesday, handing the Aztecs a 4-3 setback in a game played at USDs Cunningham Stadium.

The loss dropped SDSUs record to 13-10 while the Toreros improved to 10-9.Mike Garber (0-1) got the start for SDSU and took the loss after allowing three runs in his three innings of work. A leadoff home run in the first by the Toreros Chris Liosi opened the scoring, and Tony Betancourts double later that same inning added a second run for USD.

The Aztecs countered with two runs in the second on two hits and a Torero error. USD re-took the lead for good in the third with Betancourt driving in his second run of the game on a ground out. The home side added an insurance run in the fifth on an RBI single by Greg Sain.

Freshman Chad Chop had a pair of hits for the Aztecs including an RBI double in the eighth, but USDs Ryan Hamilton shut down SDSU in the ninth to pick up his third save of the season.

San Diego State resumes Western Athletic Conference play this weekend, hosting number-one nationally ranked Rice in a three game series on Friday (7:00 p.m.), Saturday (7:00 p.m.) and Sunday (23:00 p.m.).
