SAN DIEGO - Three Long Beach State pitchers limited San Diego State to just five hits as the 49ers defeated the Aztecs, 5-0, Tuesday evening in Long Beach. The win provided a measure of revenge for LBSU which had lost to the Aztecs earlier this season at Tony Gwynn Stadium (10-9 in 10 innings on March 3).
The loss dropped SDSUs record to 18-19 as it prepares for an important three-game series at home with New Mexico this coming weekend. Long Beach State improved to 17-14 on the year.
Aztec junior righthander Jeremy Cook suffered his seventh loss of the season in relief as he allowed the 49ers to score their first two runs in the fifth inning. Cook gave way to Ben Nelson who gave up four runs in the sixth.
LBSUs Greg Dobbs had five of the 49ers six RBIs, including a bases-loaded double in the sixth that scored three runs. No Aztec had more than one hit, and Long Beach used three double plays over the course of the game to erase potential scoring threats.
