SAN DIEGO - A two-out RBI single by Brandon Macchi drove in the winning run as San Jose State defeated San Diego State, 7-6, in a game played at Municipal Stadium in San Jose on Thursday.
The win improved San Jose State to 26-24-1 on the season and 14-11 in conference play. With the victory, the Spartans clinched a spot in the WAC Tournament to be held in Fresno next week.
The loss evened the Aztecs (27-29 overall) league record at 14-14 as they attempt to become one of the six teams that will participate in the conference championships next week. Five teams are now vying for the final three playoff spots.
The game began well for the Aztecs as they jumped on San Jose starter Joey Baker for four runs in the first inning behind a two-run double by Tyler Echelbarger. The Spartans responded with two of their own in the bottom of the inning, and closed the gap to 4-3 before SDSU opened a 6-3 lead on homers by Javier Ramos and Robert Womack in the fourth.
San Jose State closed the gap with a pair of runs in the sixth on a double by Mike Wright, and evened the score in the seventh when Dan Winterberg singled home the tying run.
The Spartans won the game in the final frame, scoring a run off reliever A.J. Samadani (7-4) who had come on in relief of starter Jeremy Cook the previous inning. Chris Sherman (2-1) picked up the win for San Jose State.
The team continue their three-game series on Friday at 12:30 and conclude their regular seasons on Saturday in a game slated to start at 11:00 a.m.
