SAN DIEGO - Wichita State broke open a tight game with a five-run fourth inning en route to a 10-4 win over San Diego State on Wednesday evening in Wichita. The win improved the 10th-ranked Shockers season record to 37-8 while the Aztecs dropped to 22-23.
Junior righthander Aaron Harang started for SDSU, throwing the first two innings and departing with a 3-2 lead. But reliever Ben Nelson (0-3) allowed the five runs in the fourth inning and took the loss.
Freshman shortstop Chris Dunwell was the Aztecs hitting star, going 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and two runs batted in. It was the second consecutive game in which Dunwell recorded a pair of two baggers.
Another freshman, first baseman Ben Leuthard, cracked his fourth home of the season (and third in four games) in the ninth inning for SDSUs final run.
The Aztecs face a crucial three-game series with Fresno State this weekend as they attempt to tighten their grip on a WAC Tournament berth. Only the leagues top six finishers advance the to post-season tournament, and SDSU currently stands fourth of 11 teams.
