Baseball Edged by USC, 5-4

May 5, 1999

SAN DIEGO - A two-out dropped fly ball scored what proved to be the winning run in USCs 5-4 win at San Diego State Tuesday evening.

The Aztecs and Trojans traded runs through the first five innings with SDSU getting a home run from catcher Brandon Rogers and RBI singles from Tyler Echelbarger, Matt Ricardy and Ben Leuthard. USC, meanwhile, was the recpient of three bases-loaded walks in the third, good for three runs.

With the score tied 4-4 in the sixth, USCs Greg Hanoian logged a two-out single and promptly stole second base. Jason Lane followed with a fly ball to deep right center field which outfielder Robert Womack reached in time, but allowed to hit off his glove for a three-base error.

Neither starting pitcher Pete Montrenes (USC) or Mike Garber (SDSU) was around to be involved in the decision. Rik Currier picked up his fourth win of the season with some relief help from Steve Smyth. Smyth threw the final 3.2 innings, allowing only two base runners (both reaching on errors) while striking out five to record his second save of the season.

San Diego States David Caron (3-3) took the loss after giving up the run in the sixth, the only inning he pitched. Five Aztec pitchers combined to strike out 10 while USC pitchers fanned a dozen.

SDSU outfielder Sean Pierce (single, double) was the lone Aztec with more than one base hit.

The Aztecs conclude their 1999 home schedule with a three-game series with Hawaii beginning Thursday (May 6) at 7:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
