SAN DIEGO - Hawaii-Hilo got two unearned runs in the bottom of the 10th inning to defeat San Diego State, 5-4, in a game played Monday evening in Hilo. The loss evened the Aztecs record at 2-2 and improved Hilos ledger to 4-13.
Jeremy Cook (1-2) took the loss after relieving starter Mike Garber in the third and pitching the final seven innings. He allowed just two hits as the Vulcans had a total of just three in the game. Cook has been involved in three pitching decisions in San Diego States first four games.
SDSU took a 2-0 lead in the third on a two-run homer by right fielder Paul Lockhart, his second of the season. Hawaii-Hilo tied the game in the bottom of that frame and went ahead in the fifth before senior Ryan Hurds solo home run in the eighth tied the game.
The Aztecs struck for a single run in the top of the 10th on a two-out RBI single by third baseman John Pashales that scored Lockhart (who had led off the inning with a double), from third.
The Vulcans leadoff hitter in the bottom of the inning, Steve Miura, reached second. on an error by second baseman Carlo Cota. He later scored on an error by catcher Brandon Rogers that allowed Paul Yap to reach first base. With two outs, Spencer Yates single in pinch runner Ian Robbins for the game-wining RBI.
San Diego States four-game series with Hawaii-Hilo continues on Wednesday with a doubleheader at 2:00 p.m. (PST) and concludes with a single game there Wednesday evening at 5:00 p.m. (PST)
