SAN DIEGO - San Jose State pitcher Vince LaCorte limited San Diego State to just four hits while striking out 16 to lead the Spartans to an 8-3 victory over the Aztecs in San Jose on Friday.
The win improved SJSUs season record to 27-24-1 (15-11 WAC) while the Aztecs fell to 27-31 (14-15 WAC).
SDSU found itself with a 3-1 lead going to the bottom of the third inning after Robert Womacks two-run homer in the first and a solo shot by Billy Montgomery in the third. But the Spartans tied the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third, then took the lead on a bases-loaded three-RBI double by frehsman second baseman Junior Ruiz in the fourth.
San Diego States Aaron Harang saw his string of six straight wins snapped as he was touched up for seven earned runs in five innings. Senior Jeff Dufek went the final three for the Aztecs, allowing no hits and one unearned run.
Meanwhile, LaCorte did not allow a hit after a leadoff single by Javier Ramos in the sixth, and he retired the final 11 men to face him. He did not yield a walk during the game.
The Spartans and Aztec conclude their three-game series on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. The Aztecs are in a must-win situation, plus they will need some help from other teams if they are to qualify for the WAC Tournament next week in Fresno.
