SAN DIEGO - David Caron scattered eight hits in a complete-gameperformance, leading San Diego State to a 5-2 Western Athletic Conference win over Utah Saturday night at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
San Diego State broke a 2-2 tie with a two-out, home run bySean Pierce off Utah starter Brett McDermaid (2-2) in the sixth. The home run was the third of the season for Pierce, who is a wide receiver on the SDSU football team.
SDSU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first on a RBI double by Adam Kim and a run scoringgroundout by Pierce.
The Aztecs' lead was short-lived, however, as Utah scored two runs of their ownin the second. With two outs, Rob Stuart hit a sharp grounder that SDSU shortstop Edgar Gonzalez threw away for a two-base error allowing Nate Weese and Jed Chrisman to score. Chrisman and Weese opened the second inning with back-to-back singles.
SDSU added two insurance runs in the seventh on back-to-back RBI singles by Bobby Womack and Kim.
Caron (2-0), a junior right-hander, went the distance for the second time this season to pick up the victory. Along the way he struck out nine while allowing just twounearned runs.
Chrisman had a game-high three hits for the Utes, while Kim, Pierce and Brandon Rogers had two hits apiece for SDSU.
SDSU (12-9, 2-0) will try for the sweep Sunday in the finale of the three-game series at 1 p.m. Sophomore left-hander Mike Garber will be the Aztecs' starting pitcher.
The loss puts Utah's record at 10-9 overall and 0-2 in WAC play.
