San Diego - San Diego State's Aaron Harang pitched eight strong innings and Paul Lockhart drove in a pair during a three-run seventh as the Aztecs spoiled Tulane's season-opener with a 4-2 win Friday night at Tony Gwynn Stadium. San Diego State improved to 6-3, while Tulane opened the 1999 campaign 0-1.
San Diego State broke a scoreless tie with a two-out, seventh-inning single by leftfielder Greg Brunswick off Tulane starter Jared Berkowitz (0-1). Berkowitz had allowed just five hits through the first sux innings, but walked pinch-hitter Tyler Echelbarger with one out and gave up a two-out single to Ryan Hurd before Brunswick singled home pinch-runner Sean Pierce. Lockhart then followed with a two-run single to right for a 3-0 Aztec lead.
The Aztecs added an insurance run in the eighth on Chris Dunwell's two-out single to right that scored John Pashales.
Harang (1-0) struck out six and walked five in eight-plus innings. He was lifted after walking Jason Sparks to lead off the ninth. Tulane true freshman third baseman Jake Gautreau then greeted reliever Dunwell with a two-run homer to right.
Hurd had a game-high three hits for the Aztecs, while Steve Shirley and Matt Groff had two hits apiece for Tulane.
