SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State baseball team evened its 1999 record at 1-1 with a 10-7 victory over Kansas State (0-2) at the Showdown in the Desert being played in Peoria, Arizona.
After giving up three runs in the top of the first, senior righthander A.J. Samadani settled down to pitch six innings and record his first win of the season. Jeff Dufek closed out the ninth to pick up the save.
The Aztecs got some offense in the bottom of the first inning with back-to-back home runs from Sean Pierce and Paul Lockhart.
Pierce, a wide receiver on the SDSU football team the past two seasons, homered in his first plate appearance as an Aztec. He went 2-for-4 (with a double) in the game with a pair of RBIs. Lockhart also had a pair of hits with three runs batted in for San Diego State. Soph. shortstop Edgar Gonzalez recorded three hits with a double and two RBIs.
SDSU completes play at the Showdown in the Desert with a game against Nebraska on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. (MST) in Peoria.
