Baseball Defeats Hawaii 6-4

May 8, 1999

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State used another strong pitching performance from Aaron Harang plus some timely hitting to defeat the Hawaii Rainbows, 6-4, Friday evening (May 7) at Tony Gwynn Stadium.

Harang, a junior who played his prep baseball just across the highway from SDSU at Patrick Henry High, went eight innings, giving up four earned runs while striking out nine and walking just one. It was his sixth consecutive win. Senior A.J. Samadani pitched the final inning and picked up his fourth save of the season.

The Aztecs got a run in each of the first two innings on a Tyler Echelbarger Sacrifice fly and a Javier Ramos RBI single. However, Hawaii knotted the score with a pair of runs in the third. The teams traded single runs over the next two innings before SDSU took the lead for good (at 4-3) on a unearned run in the fourth.

The Aztecs added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth on a double by Matt Ricardy, triple by Paul Lockhart, and a subsequent Rainbow wild pitch.

The win improved SDSUs season record to 27-28 (14-12 WAC) while the Rainbows fell to 33-18 (12-14 WAC). The teams meet in the rubber game of the series on Saturday, May 8, at 2:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
