Baseball Defeated by No. 1 Rice

SAN DIEGO - The Rice Owls captured game three of their three-gameWAC series with San Diego State, defeating the Aztecs by a score of 11-3at Tony Gwynn Stadium Sunday afternoon. The win improved Rice's seasonrecord to 22-5 (5-1 WAC) while dropping SDSU to 14-12 (4-2 WAC).

Shortstop Damon Thames went 3-for-5 with a double, home run and twoRBI to lead the Owls' offensive attack. Designated Hitter Justin Berg was 3-for-5with a pair of doubles and two RBI for Rice as well.

Paul Lockhart, Edgar Gonzalez and Chris Dunwell led theAztec charge with two hits apiece.

The Owls' took a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the eighth, but SDSUcatcher Brandon Rogers drilled a Jeff Nichols offering over the right field fence for a two-run home run, sending Nichols to the showers.

Junior RHP Jeremy Cook (3-5) started and took the loss. He went seveninnings, allowing five runs on 12 hits and a walk while striking out eight.

San Diego State next travels to Air Force for a three-game conferenceseries in Colorado Springs, Colo, March 19-21.
