Baseball Completes Sweep of Utah

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State Aztec baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Utah by defeating the Utes, 9-2, in the finale of their WAC-opening series played today at SDSU's Tony Gwynn Stadium. The win improved the Aztecs record to 12-9 (3-0 WAC) while the Utes dropped to 10-10 (0-3 WAC).

Junior righthander Jeremy Cook (3-4) picked up win after allowing two runs over thefirst seven innings. A.J. Samadani pitched the final two innings, getting five of his six outs via the strikeout as the two Aztec hurlers combined to fan 12 Utes on the day.

The Aztecs were led by soph outfielder Robert Womack who collected two hits with three RBIs. In the process, he extended his hitting streak to 14 games. Freshmen Chris Dunwell (2-for-2, 3 RBI) and Ben Leuthard (3-for-5) also contributed to the Aztec offensive charge.

The sweep of the Utes moves San Diego State into a first-place tie at the top of the WAC standings with Rice, San Jose State and UNLV, all at 3-0.

The Aztecs play at crosstown rival University of San Diego on Tuesday before hosting Rice, ranked second in the nation this week, in an important three-game WAC series at Tony Gwynn Stadium March 12-14.
