Baseball Completes Sweep of BYU

April 16, 1999

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State completed a three-game sweep of WAC rival Brigham Young with a 23-14 win over the Cougars at Provo on Friday. The win improved the Aztecs' record to 22-21 overall and an even 9-9 in conference play. The Cougars fell to 19-25 (7-13 WAC).

SDSU found itself down 4-0 at the end of the first inning, but rallied for seven in the top of the second to take a lead it would not relinquish. The inning concluded with soph Robert Womack's solo home run, the first of two for him in the game.

The Aztecs also got home runs from Brandon Rogers, Edgar Gonzales, Ben Leuthard and Tyler Echelbarger. But it was Womack who had the big day at the plate, going 3-for-6 with four runs batted in. His second round tripper of the day came in the fourth inning with two men aboard.

SDSU's six home runs was the most ever in a game for an Aztec team. The previous record of five had been accomplished five times in the past including twice this season. Most recently, the Aztecs had five homers in the second game of Thursday's twin bill against the Cougars.

Soph lefthander Mike Garber started for the Aztecs and went three innings before giving way to senior Jeff Dufek, the first of four Aztec relievers on the day. Junior David Caron came on in the fifth and threw two scoreless innings to pick up his third win of the season.

SDSU next travels to nationally-ranked Wichita State for single games on Tuesday and Wednesday (April 20-21) before returning to Tony Gwynn Stadium for a three-game league series with Fresno State beginning next Friday (April 23) at 7:00 p.m.
