SAN DIEGO, CA -
The San Diego State softball team (20-21, 13-7 WAC) entered this weekend in fourth-place, a half game behind New Mexico (38-12, 10-7 WAC) and Hawai'i for second-place in the Western Athletic Conference standings. After sweeping today's doubleheader (5-3, 4-1), the Aztecs are in no worse than third-place, depending on the outcome of Hawai'i's four-game series at Tulsa.
In game one, the Aztecs got off to a slow start, giving up two runs in the second inning off two hits and an error. The Scarlet and Black rallied to tie the game in the fourth. Junior designated player Kellie Labor scored SDSU's first run of the game from second base on UMN's short stop Marianna Fenelli's error on a Kelly Bunker pop fly. SDSU tied the game when freshman Sarah Hershman singled home Bunker.
New Mexico reclaimed the lead on Krissy Keene's solo home run in the fifth inning. The lead was short-lived as the Aztecs rallied to take a 5-3 in the bottom of the inning. Freshman Kellie Nordhagen tied the game off a fielder's choice by Labor. The Aztecs took the lead when senior first baseman Erryn Gutjahr hit a sacrifice fly to right filed, scoring junior third baseman Christy Sears.
The Aztecs took a 1-0 lead and never looked back in the second inning in game two. SDSU opened the scoring when Hershman scored on a single by Nordhagen. The Scarlet and Black added on more run in the third off a single by Sears, scoring Labor. In the fourth inning, the Aztecs scored two more runs. The final run came off a double by Labor, scoring junior left fielder Tami Simpson.
San Diego State resumes play tomorrow at noon when they close out the series against UNM. Sunday's game has been designated Senior Day. It will be the final time the Aztec seniors will don the Scarlet and Black at home.
