SAN DIEGO - San Diego State men's golf team finished seventh today at the John A. Burns Invitational at Klipper Golf Course (par 72, 6,512 yards) in Kaneohe, Hawai'i. The Aztecs shot a team total of eleven-under par 853, 21 strokes behind the winner, defending national champion and fourth-ranked, UNLV. Fifth-ranked Oklahoma State finished second (837) and No. 20 Brigham Young placed third (837).
The Men from Montezuma Mesa were led by sophomore Scott Piercy. The transfer from BYU recorded his best finish as an Aztec, firing a career-best eight-under 67-70-71-208 en route to a five-way tie for sixth-place. Kurt Cassidy shot a 76-69-70-215 on his way to a 30th-place tie. Magnus Carlsson finished in a tie for 40th after shooting a 70-78-69-217. James Stewart recorded a 73-75-72-220 to finish tied for 56th. Ryan Donovan shot a 71-76-74-211, finishing tied for 60th.
Michael Kirk of UNLV won the individual title with a 13-under 68-66-69-203, two strokes ahead of Oklahoma State's Charles Howell and Southern Methodist's Nicholas Loar.
The Scarlet and Black resume play March 8-9, when the Aztecs host the Aldila Collegiate Golf Classic in Santee, Calif.
