The San Diego State men's golf team finished fourth at the 1999 Western Athletic Conference Men's Golf Championships today. Paced by junior Magnus Carlsson's third place finish, the Aztecs shot a team score of 899 on the par 72, 6,835 yard Poppy Hills Golf Course in Monterey, Calif. Twentieth-ranked Brigham Young took the team title, firing an 875. Second-ranked UNLV took second, shooting an 886, while New Mexico placed third at 897.
The men from Montezuma Mesa were led by Carlsson. The Helingborg, Sweden product fired a two-over par 72-76-70-218 en route to a third place finish. Senior James Stewart added a solid performance placing sixth after shooting a five-over 77-72-72-221. Senior Kurt Cassidy tied for 44th, recording a 73-77-83-233, while sophomores Scott Piercy (80-79-76-235) and Larry Correa (73-86-82-241) tied for 49th and 67th respectively.
BYU's Manuel Merizalde fired a three-under 69-70-74-213 on his way to taking individual honors. Michael Kirk of UNLV took second, shooting a one-over 69-75-73-217.
