Aztecs Pick up First Victory, Down Tulsa 24-14

TULSA, Okla. (AP) - Larry Ned ran for 167 yards and San Diego State contained Tulsa's passing attack for its first victory of the season, 24-14 Saturday.

Tulsa (2-2, 0-1 WAC) led 14-10 at the end of the third quarter but twice turned the ball over in the final seven minutes, resulting in two Aztec touchdowns.

San Diego State (1-3, 1-0) held Tulsa's offense, which was averaging 500 yards per game, to 375 yards. Golden Hurricane quarterback John Fitzgerald completed 20 of 37 passes for 213 yards and one touchdown.

Ned, a sophomore making only his second career start, carried 32 times. His 24-yard run set up San Diego State's first score, a 28-yard field goal in the second quarter.

San Diego State's Jomar Butler intercepted a pass by Fitzgerald with 7:29 left and returned it 28 yards for a touchdown that gave the Aztecs their first lead at 17-14.

Tulsa then drove to the San Diego State 12-yard line, but Bryan Archibald missed a 29-yard field goal attempt. Tulsa lost the ball on a fumble with 3:59 left, leading to Brian Russell's 4-yard touchdown run.
