SAN DIEGO - San Diego State dropped a 15-5 decision at the University of Houston on Friday, February 26, and in doing so surrendered possession of the Moores Cup. The game was contested for the trophy named in honor of San Diego Padres owner John Moores who has been a benefactor to the baseball programs at both schools. The Aztecs won the first Moores Cup contest, played last season in San Diego, by a score of 10-3.
This year, however, it was the Cougars who dominated the game, scoring five runs in the sixth inning to take a 9-2 lead and break open a close game. Houston added six more in the next frame to put the game away.
The loss dropped SDSU to 7-8 on the season while the Cougars, ranked 25th in the nation, improved to 7-4.
Outfielder Robert Womack and catcher Brandon Rogers had two hits apiece for the Aztecs who had only six on the night. Paul Lockhart singled in his final at bat in the ninth inning to run his current hitting streak to 22 games. Junior righthander Aaron Harang suffered his first loss of the season
