SAN DIEGO, CA -
The San Diego State softball team wanted to send its four seniors off with a victory in their final home game today at SDSU Field. A win would have put SDSU in the driver's seat for the second seed in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament. However, the Aztecs couldn't muster any offense, scattering only two hits in a 2-1 loss to New Mexico (39-12 overall, 11-7 WAC) The Aztecs (20-22 overall, 13-8 WAC) stand in third-place, a half game ahead of the fourth-place Lobos and a game and a half behind second-place Hawai'i, who concluded its regular season this weekend.
San Diego State's only run of the game came when freshman second baseman Sarah Hershman scored on a triple by freshman right fielder Kellie Nordhaegn in the second inning. Freshman right-hander Korin Gregory (5-10) shut down the WAC's second-best hitting team until the sixth inning when UNM's Kathy Moore hit a controversial two-run shot over the left field fence. It appeared that junior left fielder Tami Simpson robbed Moore of a home run, while knocking down the outfield fence. However, since she knocked down the outfield fence before catching the ball, Moore was awarded the home run.
The Scarlet and Black close out the regular season with a three-game series versus San Jose State in San Jose, starting with a single game Friday, May 7 and a doubleheader Saturday, May 8.
