Aztecs Drop Twin Bill To Second-Ranked Fresno State

April 24, 1999

SAN DIEGO -

Fresh off a three-game sweep of Colorado State last week, the San Diego State softball team (18-20, 11-6 WAC) entered this weekend five and a half games behind first-place Fresno State (51-8, 20-0 WAC) for the lead in the Western Athletic Conference. The Aztecs hoped the offensive tear that fueled SDSU to 25 runs in the series runs against CSU would continue versus the defending national champion Fresno State. Unfortunately for SDSU, the nation's top pitching staff cooled off the Aztecs' bats, as the Scarlet and Black were blanked in both games of the doubleheader (4-0, 4-0).

In game one, SDSU found itself in an early 3-0 hole after the first inning. Miscues by SDSU led to two of those runs. Becky Witt scored the first run after a Sandra Durazo wild pitch. Then an RBI single to left field by Lindsay Fossatti turned into a two-run single when Tami Simpson fell down. The Aztecs never managed to muster any offense in the game, scattering four hits.

Game two saw more of the same from the Aztecs and Bulldogs. Freshman right-hander Korin Gregory held FSU to one run until the seventh when she gave up a three-run blast to All-American Amanda Scott. The FSU pitching duo of Kristen Hunter and Lindsay Parker continued to baffle the Scarlet and Black, as SDSU registered no runs on three hits.

The Aztecs close out the three-game series tomorrow at 2 p.m. at SDSU Field.
