April 20, 1999

SAN DIEGO -

The San Diego State University women's rowing team had another chance to shine on Saturday, April 17 at the California Collegiate Rowing Championships.

The SDSU varsity eight team, currently ranked 21st in the nation, placed second in the state behind 5th ranked USC, narrowing the gap of 1l seconds to nine from the last time these two teams faced each other about one month ago. The second varsity eight team took third place to USC and Sacramento State. The varsity four team also won the bronze medal, coming in third to UC Irvine and Santa Clara. The Aztecs won gold medals over a large field in both the varsity lightwight four race and the novice four. The novice eight and varsity lightweight eight finished fourth in a field of 18 teams.

Overall it was a good showing for the up and coming Aztecs. SDSU looks to continue to improve as it gets ready for the Pacific Coast Rowing Championships in mid May.

"We feel we can definately go faster," said head coach Scott Steckel, "Fortunately, we have a youthful team (three novice rowers in the varsity eight) and in one month, who knows how fast we'll be going."

The women's crew team will travel north to Marina Del Rey, Calif. this Saturday, April 24 to compete for the Miller Cup.
