SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's golf team fired a blistering team score of 287 intoday's third and final round at the NCAA West Regionals in Tucson,Arizona to finish fifth in the 18-team field and qualify for the 1999 NCAAChampionships. It is the first time the Aztec golf program has qualified forthe NCAA finals since 1982. SDSU had a three-round total of 875 overthe 7,025-yard Tucson National Resort course to tie for fifth with Oregon.Arizona State led wire-to-wire to capture the regional title with an 854score. Defending national champion UNLV (862), Brigham Young (864)and Cal (874) placed second, third and fourth, respectively.
San Diego State head coach Neale Stoner, who resurrected men's golf asa varsity sport in 1993 after the program had been dropped a year earlier,will now lead his team to the NCAA Championships on June 2-5 at theHazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota.
The Aztecs, who started the day in sixth place, rode the momentumprovided by junior Magnus Carlsson, who fired a final round 66, the lowscore of the entire tournament. Carlsson, SDSU's number one golfer whowas coming off a third place finish in the WAC Championships, hadstruggled in the regional's first two rounds shooting 77-81. Top finisher forSan Diego State was senior James Stewart whose 216 (70-71-75) tied foreighth place, individually. Senior Kurt Cassidy, 17th at 219; sophomoreScott Piercy, 20th at 220, and junior Gundy Jones, 86th at 236, roundedout the Aztec scoring.
