EL CAJON, CA - San Diego State freshman Hiroko Fukushima captured the first collegiate tournament of her career today by winning individual honors at the Lady Aztec Invitational at Singing Hills Country Club in El Cajon, California. The native of Yokohama, Japan matched her first round 74 for a 36-hole total of 148 to finish in a tie with Brigham Young's Jamie Stevenson. Fukushima was declared the winner as the BYU team had gone by the time the final group finished. Her previous best individual placing was a third last fall at the San Diego Classic.
Northern Arizona won the team crown in the eight-school field, finishing two strokes ahead of BYU with a score of 615. The 25th-ranked Aztecs placed third as a team with a two-day total of 625.
San Diego State now prepares for the prestigious Stanford-Peg Barnard Invitational on April 10-11 in Palo Alto, California.
