The Heart of Aztec Nation

From the roar of The Show to the traditions of the Marching Aztecs, generations of students have brought the energy, pride, and spirit of San Diego State Athletics to life.

Every great college athletics program has its traditions. At San Diego State, those traditions come alive through the students who fill the stands, lead the chants, perform on the sidelines, and turn game days into unforgettable experiences.

For generations, student spirit has been woven into the identity of SDSU Athletics. From the earliest student bands performing at football games to nationally recognized cheer and dance programs, generations of Aztecs have helped create an atmosphere that extends far beyond the action on the field or court.

Today, the Marching Aztecs, Aztec Pep Band, SDSU Cheer, Dance Team, SDSU Diamonds, and The Show each bring their own traditions and talents to the experience.

Together, they create something unmistakably San Diego State—a game-day culture built on passion, performance, and pride.

Long before the roar of today's stadium crowds, music was already part of San Diego State's identity.

The university's musical roots trace back to 1901, when an orchestra was formed at San Diego Normal School. By 1928, a student pep band under Fred Beidleman was performing on the sidelines at Aztec Football games—the same year SDSU adopted its scarlet and black colors.

The band performed at the groundbreaking of the new Montezuma Mesa campus in 1929. In 1936, university junior Frank Losey was asked to become band director and compose "Fight On," the university's fight song. A decade later, the creation of a show band in 1946 established the first Aztec Marching Band.

Since then, the Marching Aztecs have carried SDSU spirit beyond campus, performing at Super Bowls, MLB World Series and All-Star Games, and NFL games throughout California.

AZTEC PEP BAND

The sound of Aztec Basketball is inseparable from the traditions of the Pep Band.

With roots dating back to 1928, the band has helped shape the atmosphere surrounding SDSU Athletics for generations. Its evolving repertoire has become part of the game-day experience, from introducing Muse's "Uprising" in 2010 to adding Pennywise's "Bro Hymn" in 2011 as the men's basketball team takes the court.

And when the Aztecs win at home, the celebration continues through the music.

Since the early 1980s, the Pep Band has marked home victories with Kool & the Gang's "Celebration," followed by the Latin-jazz classic "Tiger of San Pedro"—a tradition that connects generations of Aztec fans through the same familiar sounds.

From the sidelines to national competition, SDSU Cheer has built a tradition of excellence.

Since beginning competitive cheer in 2003, the program has built an impressive record of success. Over 23 seasons, SDSU Cheer has finished in the Top 5 in 21 seasons, including a national championship in 2009.

Beyond competition, the team is a constant presence across SDSU Athletics, supporting home football and men's and women's basketball games, appearing at other sporting events, and representing the university throughout the community.

Among its most meaningful traditions is welcoming the football team during Warrior Walk—a game-day ritual that has continued from the Qualcomm Stadium era to Snapdragon Stadium.

The Voice of Aztec Nation | The Show

Some traditions are heard. Others are felt.

At San Diego State, The Show brings both.

Known for its energy, creativity, and unwavering support, SDSU's student section has become an important part of the Aztec Athletics experience.

Before every basketball game, the familiar "I Believe That We Will Win" chant brings students together and builds anticipation throughout Viejas Arena.

The Show is also credited with introducing a student-section tradition that spread across college basketball: oversized player-head cutouts, known as fatheads, used to distract opponents during free throws.

Through coordinated chants, creative distractions, and a relentless presence in the stands, The Show has helped establish a game-day environment that gives SDSU Basketball a distinct home-court identity.

For Aztec fans, The Show isn't simply a student section. It's part of what makes playing at San Diego State different.

The energy of San Diego State Athletics has always been about more than what happens during competition.

It's in the music that fills the stadium, the chants that echo through Viejas Arena, the performances that unite a crowd, and the traditions passed down from one generation of students to the next.

For generations, Aztecs have helped create a game-day experience defined by passion, creativity, and pride. Each organization brings something different, but together they represent the spirit that makes San Diego State unmistakable.

As SDSU enters the Pac-12, those traditions come with it—bringing the sound, energy, and identity of Aztec Nation into a new chapter of competition.

The conference may change. The spirit remains.
