Adrian Dubois is in his second year at San Diego State after joining the Aztecs as an assistant coach prior to the 2023 season. Dubois came from the University of Vermont, where as an associate head coach, he helped lead the Catamounts to a 16-4-2 record and an Elite Eight in 2022.
In 2023, the Aztecs were the last team in the nation to concede their first goal, a school record stretch of 651 minutes to begin the season. SDSU rose as high as No. 17 in the national rankings after going undefeated in non-conference play (6-0-2) for the second time in the last three years. Individually, the Aztecs had four players earn All-Pac-12 honors, highlighted by Reid Fisher winning Pac-12 Freshman of the Year, the second straight year an Aztec has taken home those honors.
"I couldn't be more excited to welcome a coach and person like Adrian to our program," Coach Hopkins explained upon his hiring. "Adrian will bring a positive approach on and off the field based around discipline, self-awareness, and accountability. His experience will be extremely valuable not only for the players. but for me as well to bounce ideas off as we collaborate to push the program to new heights. The hiring of Adrian shows not only our ambitions as a program but also the attractiveness of the position as well."
Prior to his five years at Vermont, Dubois was the head coach at Saint Joseph's College of Maine (DIII) from 2014-18 where he won three conference championships and set numerous NCAA records.
"I am both honored and grateful to be named an assistant coach at San Diego State University," Dubois said when hired. "First and foremost, I would like to thank Coach Hopkins for this opportunity to join one of the best soccer programs in the country. I am excited to get on the beautiful SDSU campus and work with this talented team to begin a new chapter and continue to build toward something extraordinary. I'd also like to thank [Vermont head coach] Rob Dow and the coaching staff for the last five years for an incredible, successful, and memorable journey at UVM. My family and I are excited to join the San Diego State University community and get back to the West Coast."
While at Vermont, Dubois was tabbed as one of the top 12 assistant coaches in the country by College Soccer News after helping establish the Catamounts as one of the top programs in the nation. Last season, Vermont finished the year ranked as the No. 4 team in the country following their run to the NCAA quarterfinals.
The Catamounts also made the NCAA Tournament in 2021 after going 13-5-2 and winning the American East Tournament championship. In the shortened 2020 season they went 5-2-1 and were runners-up in the American East tournament and in 2019 they won the conference regular season championship.
While at Vermont, he served as the program's Recruiting Coordinator and helped bring in three MAC Hermann Watch List honorees, two All-Americans, eight All-Region selections, t2o goalkeepers of the year and two MLS SuperDraft selections.
"Adrian is extremely well-versed in navigating all the recruiting areas of the U.S. youth leagues, transfer portal, and international markets," Hopkins said. "His relentless pursuit in recruiting will be key in the ever-changing roster management of modern-day college athletics."
Dubois had an incredible four-year run as the head coach at Saint Joseph's College where the Monks set four NCAA records (for all divisions) including most consecutive shutouts (20), longest shutout minutes streak (1,802:54), goals against average (.047) and save percentage (.983). At one point, they had a 42-match unbeaten streak, which is the fifth longest in NCAA Division III history.
During his time at Saint Joseph's College, he won three conference Coach of the Year awards and was the New England Region Coach of the Year in 2017 and a finalist for National Coach of the Year. In 2018, the Monks finished No. 5 in the country after going 21-1.
Dubois has also spent the better part of the past decade working with youth clubs. In Vermont, he was a Senior Staff Coach for the Far Post Soccer Club, where he was the head coach for the club's oldest age group and won the 2021 Vermont Soccer Association Boys Competitive Coach of The Year Award. In Maine, he was a coach for the Seacoast United Soccer Club, serving as the head coach of their U-19 Academy Team in 2018 and 19 also won the 2017 U.S. Club National Championship.
Dubois also has had coaching stops at UMass Boston (2013-14) and UC San Diego (2011-13).
A native of Acworth, New Hampshire, Dubois was a three-year starting midfielder at the University of New Hampshire from 2005-09 and earned All-American and Gatorade Player of the Year accolades following his senior season at Fall Mountain Regional High School.
He went on to play professionally for the Western Mass Pioneers (USL League One) and the Los Angeles Blues (USL Championship).
Dubois earned a biology degree from the University of New Hampshire in 2009 and then got his MBA at Saint's Joseph's in 2020. He also holds a USSF B Coaching License.
