Aztecs Tied For Sixth Place After Two Rounds at Sycuan Collegiate

EL CAJON, Calif. - The San Diego State men's golf team finished the first two rounds of the Sycuan Collegiate Invitational in a tie for sixth place after shooting a combined 11-under 565. SDSU, which shot a 2-over 290 in the first round, came back to card a 13-under 275 in the second at Willow Glen Golf Course at the Sycuan Resort on Monday.

Leading the way for the Aztecs after two rounds was Johan Carlsson. The sophomore notched a pair of 69s to head into the final round in a tie for fifth place at 6-under par (138). Carlsson finds himself six shots behind tournament leader Dustin Garza of Wichita State (-12), after the Shocker turned in one of the best scores in the history of Willow Glen with his 11-under 61 in the second round.

Freshman Andrew Cooley is one shot back of Carlsson after he carded a two-round score of 139 to finish in a tie for ninth at 5-under, while senior David Palm posted a day-one total of 2-under 142 to sit in a tie for 28th place.

Rounding out the SDSU first team were sophomore Matt Hoffenberg and senior Bryan Martin. Hoffenberg, last season's Mountain West Conference freshman of the year, fired a 2-over 146, which was good for a tie for 61st, while Martin carded a 3-over 147 (t-73rd).

San Diego State's second team received solid efforts from J.J. Spaun, Alex Kang and Ryan Citarella, who all posted scores of even or better. Spaun ended his day in a tie for ninth with a two-round total of 139, which was good for 5-under par. His freshman teammate, Kang, shot a 67 in the first round and came back with a par 72 in the second to also finish at 5-under. Citarella, meanwhile, went 71 in the first and 73 in the second to record an overall score of even-par 144.

Colin Featherstone and Tyler Morris made up the rest of the B-squad and carded scores of 2-over 146 and 6-over 150, respectively.

In addition to its scoring team and team of individuals, SDSU also fielded three players who competed as individuals. David Lyons led the threesome with a 2-under 142 to enter Tuesday's round in a tie for 28th place. Michael Wynn finished two shots behind Lyons at even-par 144, while Jerry Porras posted a score of 147 (+3).

The Aztecs and the rest of the 120-player field begin third and final round action with a 7:30 a.m. PT shotgun start.
