COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The San Diego State men’s golf team became the first team in the Mountain West’s 26-year history to sweep all three major awards in the same season, the league announced Thursday. Senior Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) was named the Mountain West Golfer of the Year, Harry Takis (Brisbane, Australia) was chosen as the MW Freshman of the Year and Ryan Donovan was selected as the MW Coach of the Year.
Hastings is the seventh Aztec to be named the MW Golfer of the Year and first since Puwit Anupansuebsai in the 2019-20 season. Takis, meanwhile, is the second SDSU golfer to be named the MW Freshman of the Year in the last three seasons (also Dylan Oyama in 2022-23) and fifth in league history. Donovan was chosen as the MW Coach of the Year for the fifth time (also 2011, 2012, 2015 and 2023).
Juniors Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) and Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy) joined Hastings and Takis on the 10-man all-conference team, marking the most all-conference selections (four) in school history and tied for the most in league history. The major awards and all-conference team are voted on by the league’s 11 head coaches.
Hastings has had arguably the best season in San Diego State history, racking up two victories and posting the best scoring average (70.0) in program history. Out of his 10 collegiate tournaments, he has two wins (by four strokes each), a runner-up finish and six top-10 efforts. Most recently, Hastings became the fourth Aztec to win a MW Championship after carding an 18-under-par 198. He also won the Lamkin Classic, March 10-11, in a tournament-record 16-under 200. A two-time MW Golfer of the Week this season, Hastings was chosen to the all-MW team for a third time of his career, tied with Aaron Goldberg (2006-08), J.J. Spaun (2010-12), Xander Schauffele (2013-15) and Nahum Mendoza III (2015-17), and only trailing Anupansuebsai’s four selections from 2019-22. Last week, Hastings was named to the international team for the Arnold Palmer Cup in June. In January, Hastings won the Latin American Amateur Championship, earning an invitation to The Masters, where he posted the best score by an amateur, and exemptions into the U.S. Open and The Open.
Takis ranks second on the team with a 71.16 scoring average in 32 rounds, which is the 10th-lowest scoring average in recorded SDSU single-season history (since 1993-94). He twice finished runner-up on the season, both times to Hastings at the Lamkin Classic and the MW Championship. Takis, who has been named the MW Freshman of the Week three times his season, has 12 rounds in the 60s, tied for the most on the team, and 14 rounds below par. He is the first San Diego State freshmen to make the all-conference team since Ricky DeSantis in 2014 and just the second in MW history.
Donovan picked up his second coach-of-the-year award in the last three seasons and fifth of his career. The Aztecs won their fourth consecutive Mountain West Championship last month by 23 strokes at 54-under-par. SDSU became just the second team in league history to win four straight MW team titles (New Mexico, 2003-06). It was the seventh MW Championship for San Diego State - all under Donovan - which only trails the Lobos’ eight titles. The Aztecs now have three team championships on the season (also Lamkin Classic (March 10-11) for the first time since 2013 and Western Intercollegiate (April 14-16) for the first time since 1960), tied for the fourth most in a season in program history. SDSU, which is 15th in the latest NCAA computer ratings and 16th in the most recent Bushnell/Golfweek DI Coaches Poll, also has a pair of runner-up finishes, while playing one of the toughest schedules in the country. San Diego State’s 283.73 scoring average ranks second in school history, which does not include the six-count-five Western Intercollegiate, which the Aztecs won by five strokes.
Chokprajakchat made his first all-conference team and ranks third on the squad with a 71.22 scoring average across 32 rounds. He has been SDSU’s top golfer in three tournaments, including San Diego State’s victory at the Western Intercollegiate from April 14-16. Chokprajakchat has a runner-up finish and five top-10s in 10 starts this season, leading the Aztecs with six even-par rounds and ranking second with 15 rounds below par.
Kowack landed on the all-MW team for a second straight season. He is fourth on the team with a 71.88 scoring average and is the only SDSU player to start and play all 33 rounds this season. Kowack opened with a 6-under 66 at the MW Championship and finished eighth overall at -9. He has been San Diego State’s top golfer in three tournaments on the season, logging a T4, two top-10s and five top-20 finishes.
The Aztecs earned the No. 3 seed in the 2025 Tallahassee Regional, which is set for May 12-14 at Seminole Legacy Golf Club in Tallahassee, Florida. The top-five squads and lowest individual not on those teams from the Tallahassee Regional will advance to the NCAA Championships, slated for May 23-28, at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in nearby Carlsbad, California, hosted by Texas. SDSU has won three of its last four tournaments, marking the first time San Diego State has three tournament wins in the spring since 2012.
