TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The San Diego State men’s golf team tied for seventh place at 3-over-par 867, ending its season Wednesday at the NCAA Tallahassee Regional in Tallahassee, Florida.
The Aztecs, who earned the No. 3 seed in the regional as the 15th-ranked team in the latest Scoreboard powered by clippd computer rankings, carded a 3-under 285 on the par-72, 7,520-yard Seminole Legacy Golf Club in their final round for their best round of the tournament but were two places and six shots back of Augusta for the final qualifying spot in the NCAA Championships, slated for May 22-28, at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in nearby Carlsbad, California.
At one point in Wednesday’s final round, SDSU reached 2-under and was in a three-way tie for the final qualifying spot. San Diego State’s four counting scorers, however, went 5-over-par over the final 10 holes to finish in a tie with No. 27 Louisville at +3, a shot behind USC (+2) in sixth place. No. 11 and tournament host Florida State competed its wire-to-wire victory at -29, while No. 3 Ole Miss (-20), No. 46 New Mexico (-14), No. 22 Georgia (-7) and Augusta (-3) also advanced to next week’s NCAA Championships.
The Aztecs finished their season with three team victories in 12 tournaments, along with two runner-up finishes, seven top-5s and 10 in the top 10. SDSU captured the Lamkin Classic, March 10-11, for the first time since 2013, the Western Intercollegiate, April 14-16, for the first time since 1960 and the Mountain West Championship, April 25-27, for the fourth consecutive season and seventh time in league history.
Freshman Harry Takis (Brisbane, Australia) and junior Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy) were San Diego State’s top players, tying for 19th at 1-under 215. Takis, the 2025 MW Freshman of the Year, carded a 2-under 70 to lead the Aztecs on Wednesday, highlighted by four birdies and two bogeys. Kowack, who was named to his second consecutive MW all-conference team, shot a 1-over 73 in today’s final round with three birdies and four bogeys.
Senior Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) finished in a tie for 39th in his final collegiate event at +5 following a 1-under 71 today. The MW Golfer of the Year, Hastings went out with a front-nine 32 (-4) but opened with four bogeys to start his back nine, posting a 39 for his 71.
Sophomore Nathan Sampson (Temecula, Calif.) came in 56th at 11-over 227 with a 75 on Wednesday. Sampson had two birdies and five bogeys on the day.
Junior Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand), who was unable to play in Monday’s first round, shot a 1-under 71 and was -1 for his two rounds during the week. The highlight for Chokprajakchat was an eagle on the par-5, 560-yard fourth hole. He also had two birdies and three bogeys.
Florida State’s Luke Clanton captured medalist honors at 15-under 201, including a 69 in today’s final round. Clanton finished four strokes ahead of Michael La Sasso (Ole Miss) and Buck Brumlow (Georgia), who each were at -11. Notre Dame’s Jacob Modleski (-9) also advanced to Carlsbad as an individual, coming in fourth place overall.
