TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The San Diego State men’s golf team is in a tie for 11th place after the first day of the NCAA Tallahassee Regional Monday in Tallahassee, Florida. The Aztecs, who earned the No. 3 seed in the regional as the 15th-ranked team in the latest Scoreboard powered by clippd computer rankings, carded a 6-over-par 294 on the par-72, 7,520-yard Seminole Legacy Golf Club.
SDSU and No. 27 Louisville are tied for 11th at +6, one stroke behind USC (+5) for 10th and two shots back of Michigan State (+4). No. 11 Florida State fired a 14-under 274 on its home course and leads No. 39 Notre Dame (-7) by seven strokes. No. 3 Ole Miss is third through 18 holes at -6, while No. 46 New Mexico and Augusta are tied for fourth at -3.
The top-five squads and lowest individual not on those teams from the Tallahassee Regional will advance to a spot in the NCAA Championships, slated for May 22-28, at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in nearby Carlsbad, California, hosted by Texas. No. 22 Georgia (-2), No. 34 Northwestern (+2) and Furman (+2) are also ahead of San Diego State after the first round.
Senior Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) is the top Aztec after carding a 1-under 71, which is tied for 16th out of 75 players. Hastings shot a 3-under 33 on the front nine but opened double bogey-bogey on the back nine and shot a 38 to settle for a 71.
Junior Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy) is tied for 25th at even-par 72. Kowack logged three birdies on the day, including the par-4, 490-yard 18th, offset by three bogeys.
Freshman Harry Takis (Brisbane, Australia) is a shot back of Kowack in a tie for 33rd at +1. Takis had only one birdie on the day, which came on the par-5, 560-yard fourth, along with two bogeys and 15 pars.
Sophomore Nathan Sampson (Temecula, Calif.) was the Aztecs’ fourth scorer in a tie for 67th at +6. Sampson was an even-par through eight holes but went 6-over-par over his final 10 holes of the first round.
Sophomore Dylan Oyama (Carlsbad, Calif.) shot an 81 (+9) and is tied for 73rd.
Florida State’s Luke Clanton tops the first day at 6-under, while Notre Dame’s Jacob Modleski and Georgia’s Buck Brumlow are a shot back at -5.
SDSU will tee off from the 10th hole in Tuesday’s second round, beginning at 8:55 a.m. ET (5:55 a.m. PT), along with Louisville and USC.
