CRESWELL, Ore. -- Senior Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) earned medalist honors, and the San Diego State men’s golf team won its fourth consecutive Mountain West Championship in dominating fashion on Sunday in Creswell, Oregon. The Aztecs, who are 17th nationally in the latest Scoreboard powered by clippd computer rankings, carded a 10-under-par 278 in Sunday’s final round on the par-72, 7,164-yard Emerald Valley Golf Club to win by 23 strokes over No. 35 UNLV (-31) at 54-under for the tournament.
SDSU became just the second team in league history to win four straight MW team titles (New Mexico, 2003-06). It was the seventh MW Championship for San Diego State - all under head coach Ryan Donovan - which only trails the Lobos’ eight titles. The Aztecs now have three team championships on the season (also Lamkin Classic from March 10-11 and Western Intercollegiate from April 14-16), tied for the fourth most in a season in program history.
Rounding out the top 5 in the 11-team field behind SDSU (-54) and the Rebels (-31) was No. 47 New Mexico (-30), Colorado State (-22) and San Jose State (-22). San Diego State’s 54-hole score of 810 only trailed its 2023 MW Championship total of 804 for the best in its conference championship history. The 810 is also tied for the fourth-lowest 54-hole score in program history.
Hastings shot 3-under 69 in today’s final round and finished at 18-under 198, four shots ahead of Aztec freshman Harry Takis (Brisbane, Australia) (-14). The 198 is tied for the third-lowest individual score in MW Championship history behind teammate Dylan Oyama (Carlsbad, Calif./Pacific Ridge HS) and Colorado State’s Christoph Bleier, who each carded a 197 in the 2023 tournament played in Tucson, Arizona, before Oyama won in a playoff. The 198 is tied for the fourth-lowest score in SDSU history (Hastings has the record at 195 set at the 2023 Maui Jim Intercollegiate).
Hastings is San Diego State’s fourth individual winner in the 26-year history of the league, joining John Lepak in 2001 at Sunriver Resort in Oregon, Puwit Anupansuebsai in 2021 in Arizona and Oyama in 2023 in Arizona. Hastings now has two wins this season (also the Lamkin Classic), which only trails Anupansuebsai (2021-22) and J.J. Spaun (2011-12) for the most in recorded program history (since 1993-94). His four career championships are tied for the third most as an Aztec, only trailing five by Spaun (2009-12) and Lennie Clements (1976-79).
Hastings had four birdies and a bogey in today’s final round, and finished the weekend ranked first in par-4 scoring (3.63) and tied for first in par-3 scoring (2.83). He also tied for the most eagles (2) in the tournament, while recording the third-most birdies (18).
Takis, meanwhile, finished second at 14-under 202 following a 69 today. The 202 was a career low, while his solo second was the best finish of his career. Takis came up with six birdies and three bogeys. For the week, Takis tied for the best par-5 scoring average (4.42) and for the most birdies (19).
Sophomore Nathan Sampson (Temecula, Calif.), competing in his first MW Championship like Takis, tied for fourth at 11-under 205, two shots behind UNLV’s Zach Little (-13). Sampson had a 69 today after consecutive 68s on Friday and Saturday, respectively, sinking six birdies with two bogeys. The 205 was the lowest 54-hole score of his career as he logged his first top-20 finish of the season, matching Takis for the best par-5 scoring average (4.42) and for the most birdies (19) in the tournament.
Junior Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy) shot a even-par 72 today and finished eighth at 9-under 207. Kowack had two birdies and two bogeys on Sunday.
Oyama filled in for junior Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) in today’s final round and carded a 1-under 71 with four birdies and three bogeys. Chokprajakchat was 7-under through two rounds and in a tie for eighth.
SDSU awaits its NCAA Regional destination, which will be announced at 10 a.m. PT Wednesday live on the Golf Channel.
