CRESWELL, Ore. -- Senior Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) matched a school record with a 62 to vault into first place and three-time defending Mountain West champion San Diego State carded the best round for the second straight day to extend their lead through 36 holes at the 2025 Credit Union 1 Mountain West Men’s Golf Championship Saturday in Creswell, Oregon.

The Aztecs, who are 17th nationally in the latest Scoreboard powered by clippd computer rankings, fired a 25-under-par 263 in the second round on the par-72, 7,123-yard Emerald Valley Golf Club and now lead second-place San Jose State (-22) by 22 strokes at 44-under heading into Sunday’s final round. Colorado State (-18), No. 35 UNLV (-18) and New Mexico (-13) round out the top-5 in the 11-team field.

Hastings punctuated his record-tying round with an eagle on the par-5, 577-yard 18th hole to go along with eight birdies and no bogeys. Hastings leads teammate Harry Takis (Brisbane, Australia) by four strokes at 15-under par. Hastings is the first player in SDSU recorded history to have multiple 62s (also the first round of the 2023 Maui Jim Intercollegiate) and just the second to card a 62 in the Mountain West Championship, joining Dylan Oyama, who had his 62 in the final round of the 2023 championship en route to winning it as a true freshman. Oyama is an alternate on this year’s squad. Hastings has two of San Diego State’s six 62s in recorded program history.

Hastings is one of four Aztecs who sit in the top 5 out of the 55-man field through two rounds. Takis, a freshman, is second at -11, while junior Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy) is third (-9) and sophomore Nathan Sampson (Temecula, Calif.) is in a four-way tie for fourth at -8. Both Takis and Sampson are playing in their first career MW Championship.

Takis set a collegiate best with 7-under 65, going bogey free with seven birdies, including four of his final five holes. A three-time MW Freshman of the Week this season, Takis moved up four spots on the day.

Kowack, who was tied for the lead after the first round after carding a 66, shot a 69 in today’s second round. Kowack had six birdies and three bogeys for his round.

Sampson, meanwhile, carded his second straight 68. Sampson came up with five birdies and a lone bogey.

Junior Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) shot a 4-under 68 and is in a tie for eighth at -7.

SDSU will begin its final round at 10:40 a.m. PT Sunday.
