LAS VEGAS – San Diego State women’s tennis is moving on to the semifinal of the Mountain West Championship after shutting out Wyoming 4-0 on Thursday morning. The top-seeded Aztecs will next face fourth-seeded Boise State at 10 a.m. on Friday.
The Scarlet and Black captured their ninth straight win in commanding fashion with straight-set victories on courts one, four and six, improving to 17-6 on the season.
After falling behind in doubles with Zoe Olmos and Gloria Alogo being bested 6-1 by Wyoming’s Eugenia Ceinos and Elena Trencheva on court two, Jo-Yee Chan and Vesa Gjinaj earned a 6-2 win over Serina Abriola and Ruby Young on court three. All-Mountain West Doubles selection Yasmine Kabbaj and Ninon Martinache then secured the doubles point, taking down Violetta Borodina and Dilnaz Mashabayeva on the top court in the pair’s 11th win of the season.
Kabbaj was the first to earn a point in singles competition, knocking off Ana Kochelaevskaia 6-2, 6-1 in the top spot.
Martinache extended the lead for the Aztecs with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Ceinos on the fourth court. The junior remains perfect in conference play with a 9-0 record.
Gjinaj was the clincher for San Diego State, taking court six 6-2, 6-1 over Abriola to send the Aztecs to the semifinal.
Three courts were left unfinished. Playing in the second spot, Chan fell 7-6 (7-2) to Borodina in the first set, but led 4-1 in the second when the match was called. On court three, Alogo was ahead 7-6 (7-5), 2-1 against Trencheva and Olmos had a 7-5, 2-1 advantage over Mashabayeva on court five.
Next up, the Aztecs will take on fourth-seeded Boise State for a spot in the championship match. The Broncos punched their ticket to the semifinal with a 4-0 win over Fresno State on Thursday.
