SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- The San Diego State men’s golf team carded a 2-under-par 348 in the final round to storm to its first Western Intercollegiate championship since 1960 at 6-under 1,044 Wednesday at the historic Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz, California.
It is the second team title of the season for the Aztecs, who entered the weekend 18th in the latest NCAA Scoreboard computer rankings. SDSU, which was making its 14th consecutive appearance at the Western Intercollegiate, was one of only two teams under par in the tournament with No. 42 Stanford (-1). No. 22 Pepperdine (+6), Nihon Univ. (+7) and No. 34 UNLV (+8) rounded out the top 5. Other teams in the top-40 of the 14-team tournament included No. 29 Brigham Young (6th, +9), No. 21 Arizona (T-8th, +13) and No. 36 Oregon (T-8th, +13).
It was the final regular season tournament for San Diego State, which will be looking for its fourth straight Mountain West championship, April 25-27, at Emerald Valley Golf Club in Creswell, Oregon.
The Aztecs had four players shoot under-par on the par-70, 6,486-yard course, led by junior Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand), who finished in a tie for ninth place out of 91 golfers at 3-under 207. Chokprajakchat shot a 1-over 71 in today’s final round with five birdies and six bogeys.
Three other SDSU players were a shot back in an eight-way tie for 11th at -1, including junior Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy), senior Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) and freshman Harry Takis (Brisbane, Australia). Kowack fired a 2-under 68 to move up 11 spots, recording four birdies and two bogeys on the day.
Hastings, who made the trip back out west after finishing with the lowest score among amateurs at the Masters last weekend, had a 71 on Wednesday with two birdies and three bogeys. Takis, meanwhile, carded a 2-over 72 with two birdies and four bogeys.
San Diego State had four of the 20 players that shot under par for the tournament.
Sophomore Nathan Sampson (Temecula, Calif.) matched medalist Filip Jakubcik of Arizona with the lowest third round, firing a 4-under 66 in today’s final round to vault 33 spots into a tie for 30th. After starting out with five consecutive pars, Sampson birdied six of his next seven holes with a bogey mixed in. He went 1-over-par over his final six holes to post the lowest 18-hole round of his collegiate career.
Sophomore Dylan Oyama (Carlsbad, Calif.) tied for 66th at 12-over 22 following a 77 in today’s final round.
