TUCSON, Ariz. -- Two-time All-American Shaquena Foote ran her second-fastest 400 meters to lead the San Diego State track and field team Saturday at the Desert Heat Classic in Tucson, Arizona.
Competing in just her second 400 of the outdoor season, Foote ran a time of 51.42 seconds to take second out of 42 runners. Only Iowa State’s Rachel Joseph ran faster, setting a Drachman Stadium record in 50.79. Foote’s 51.42 only trails her 51.35 set at the 2024 NCAA West Prelims, which was the third fastest in school history.
The Aztecs also shined in the 100-meter hurdles, logging three top-7 finishes. Charlize James came in fourth in 13.35, while Jada Pierre (13.43) and Mia Reid (wind-aided 13.57) came in fifth and seventh, respectively, out of 28 entrants.
Sophia Wolf took fifth out of 34 in the 800 in 2:08.24, while the SDSU 4x400-meter relay took fifth in 3:40.69. Aji Mbye added a 13th-place showing in the 100 (wind-aided 11.59) and came in 14th in the 200 (23.73).
San Diego State will compete in the Franson Last Chance Meet, May 8-10, in Azusa, California, before the Mountain West Championships takes place May 15-17 in Clovis, California.
