SAN DIEGO – San Diego State senior Evan Sipe was recently added to the midseason watch list for the Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award, as announced by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission.
A native of nearby San Marcos, California, Sipe has started 30 of 32 games for the Aztecs in 2025, leading the team’s catchers with 10 runners caught stealing, which is slotted sixth in the Mountain West. He also ranks second on the squad among regulars with a .981 fielding percentage.
Entering the week, Sipe leads the conference with 10 sacrifice hits, which is tied for 11th nationally and is just four short of the school record.
Against Seton Hall in the season opener, Sipe set a career high with putouts in all 17 chances and matched his collegiate best with two doubles, helping the Scarlet and Black to a 16-11 victory. He also threw out a pair of would-be base stealers vs. Northeastern (March 8) and at Washington State (March 22) to equal a personal best.
To date, Sipe is one of 56 catchers nominated for the Buster Posey Award by their schools. Because the award is given annually to the top Division I collegiate catcher, the list will be updated to include other candidates until May 5, 2025.
The watch list will be narrowed down to the semifinalists, all of whom will be announced on May 19.
Ballots will be sent to the national voting committee on May 27 for a vote to determine the three finalists. The finalists will be announced on June 5, with the final vote among the national committee closing on June 16.
The winner will be revealed on Thursday, June 26 at the Buster Posey Award Ceremony at INTRUST Bank Arena in Wichita, Kan.
Sipe and the Aztecs will play host to New Mexico this weekend in a pivotal three-game Mountain West series, May 2-4, at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
