COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- San Diego State’s Harry Takis has been named the Mountain West Freshman Golfer of the Week, the league announced Monday. It is the third weekly league honor of the season for the Brisbane, Australia native.
Takis helped the Aztecs win the Western Intercollegiate last week at historic Pasatiempo Golf Course in Santa Cruz, California, for the first time since 1960. It was SDSU’s second team win of the season and final tournament before looking to win its fourth consecutive Mountain West Championship.
Takis was one of three San Diego State golfers to tie for 11th out of 91 at 1-under 209 on the difficult par-70, 6,486-yard course. Takis opened with a 4-under 66 for the best collegiate round of his career and followed with a 71 and 72.
The Aztecs beat out 13 other teams, including No. 42 Stanford (-1), No. 22 Pepperdine (+6), No. 34 UNLV (+8), No. 29 Brigham Young (6th, +9), No. 21 Arizona (T-8th, +13) and No. 36 Oregon (T-8th, +13).
Takis has the second-best scoring average for SDSU this spring at 70.65. Including the four fall events, Takis ranks third on the team with a 71.55 stroke average in 10 events and 29 rounds.
The Mountain West Championship will take place at Emerald Valley Golf Club in Creswell, Oregon, beginning on Friday.
