SAN DIEGO – San Diego State men’s tennis hosted Wichita State at the Aztec Tennis Center Friday afternoon. The Scarlet and Black were only able to capture victories on two singles courts in a 5-2 defeat.
The Shockers secured the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. Philipp Bosse and Paul Janson fell 6-2 to Luke Bracks and Vanja Hodzik on court three before Ilias Worthington and Kristof Minarik clinched the point with a 6-3 win over Liam Spiers and Marc Kleber on court two. The top court matchup between Alexander Mandma/Mathieu Josserand and Arenui Luethi/Alejandro Jacome was left unfinished with the Shockers leading 5-3.
The Aztecs fell behind in singles, only winning one first set. Freshmen Denis Maijorov and Marc Kleber were the only two Aztecs to win their matchups after being bumped up in the lineup due to the absence of Alexander Mandma and Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice.
Playing on court five, Maijorov took down Amir Milushev 6-4, 3-6, 10-8. Kleber earned a hard-fought victory over Arenui Luethi, taking court six 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 10-7.
On the top court, Bosse was bested 6-3, 6-4 by Minarik.
Josserand came up short 6-2, 6-3 to Jacome on the second court.
In the third spot, Spiers fell 6-4, 6-4 to Hodzik.
Mountain West Freshman of the Week, Paul Janson, suffered a 6-2, 6-3 defeat to Worthington on court four.
“It was a tough match today for our Aztecs,” said Head Coach Gene Carswell. “The bright side is the young players at the back of our lineup are getting opportunities with the absence of Alex and Eugenio in singles. Both Denis and Marc came away with victories and are showing growth from the experience they’ve gained over the past few weeks.”
The Aztecs return to action on March 28, hosting UNLV in a conference matchup at 2 p.m.
