SAN DIEGO – San Diego State’s Paul Janson has earned Mountain West Men’s Tennis Freshman of the Week honors for the week of March 9, the conference announced on Wednesday. The freshman from Munich, Germany captured his first singles win of the 2025 dual campaign against Idaho on Saturday to take home his first conference honors.

The Scarlet and Black dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker to the Vandals at Lomas Santa Fe Country Club, but Janson put up an impressive performance in his dual singles debut. Playing without Mathieu Josserand and Marc Kleber, the Aztecs had to shift their typical lineup, putting Janson on court six. Facing Idaho’s Eric Wang, the freshman dropped the first set 6-3, but rallied to a 6-2 win in the second. The third set was a battle, but Janson ultimately came out on top in a close tiebreaker, 7-6 (8-6).

Janson also paired up with Liam Spiers on the second court in doubles play, but their match against Chetanna Amadike and Sebastian Medica was left unfinished, tied at 5-5 when the doubles point was secured.

Janson is now 1-0 on the season in dual action after posting a 5-5 record in tournament play. The Aztecs are 6-8 overall and 0-1 in the Mountain West.

San Diego State men’s tennis returns to action this Friday, taking on Wichita State at 2 p.m. at the Aztec Tennis Center.
