SAN DIEGO -- Week 5 was another productive week for former Aztecs in the NFL as five players suited up for games last week.
Rashaad Penny started the week off strong with a good game against the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday night. He totaled six carries for 18 yards on the ground, while adding two receptiosn for 31 yards (15.5 avg.). His night was highlighted by a 30-yard catch while being interfered with by Rams cornerback Aqib Talib, which not only converted on third down, but also moved Seattle into the red zone. The play set up a field goal in a game which the Seahawks ultimately won by a single point. He played 12 snaps, all on offense. Penny and the Seahawks return to action on Sunday in Cleveland to face the Browns.
Pittsburgh Steelers safety Kameron Kelly had a big game in Week 5 against the Baltimore Ravens, logging two solo tackles and his first career interception. Lamar Jackson's pass bounced up into the air off the shoulder of Ravens tight end Mark Andrews and into the waiting hands of Kelly for the pick. After he came down with the ball, Kelly was able to return the interception 10 yards to set up the Steelers with terrific field position at Baltimore's 16 yard line. Pittsburgh was able to convert Kelly's takeaway into points with a field goal. Kelly was on the field for 25 snaps for the Steelers (10 on defense), who lost to the Ravens, 26-23, in overtime. Pittsburgh travels to Los Angeles for a Week 6 matchup with the Chargers.
Another former Aztec defensive back, Damontae Kazee, is now a cornerback for the Atlanta Falcons. Kazee assisted on a pair of tackles for the Falcons in their shootout loss to the Houston Texans this week. Kazee played in 31 snaps on defense for Atlanta. He came into the game battling an illness, and was removed from the game with a possible concussion. The Falcons go to Arizona to take on the Cardinals in Week 6.
Kazee's opponent to be in Week 6, Cardinals long snapper Aaron Brewer, played in 11 snaps for Arizona's special teams. The snaps were pivotal as the Cardinals were 6-for-7 on field goals and extra points. They ended up beating the Bengals, 26-23, for their first win of the season. Brewer and the Cardinals host Kazee and the Falcons in Week 6.
Daniel Brunskill was the only former Aztec on the active roster of an undefeated team heading into the week. His 49ers didn't play until Monday night, by which time they were one of two remaining undefeated teams. Brunskill played in six offensive snaps for San Francisco in a 31-3 win over the Cleveland Browns. Brunskill is expected to start at right tackle Sunday at the Los Angeles Rams with Mike McGlinchey out with an injury.
Nick Bawden and the Detroit Lions were on bye in Week 5. They return to play at Green Bay on Monday night.
Kahale Warring remains on injured reserve for the Texans, while Calvin Munson is still on the Patriots' practice squad.
After a 24-10 win in Fort Collins over Colorado State, the Aztecs (4-1, 1-1 MW) return home for a game against Wyoming (4-1, 1-0 MW) at 7:30 P.M. PT on Saturday night.
